The Roman Walk

This September, adventurer and fundraiser Josh Garman will walk the entire length of Britain in full Roman armour, pushing a Roman chariot, to raise funds for Goodwill Caravan’s humanitarian support for forcibly displaced Sudanese families in Egypt.

Inspired by his journeys through Egypt and the Sudanese families he met there, Josh has taken on this extraordinary challenge to turn his experience into action. Over 6–8 weeks, he will travel from Dunnet Head in northern Scotland to Portchester Roman Castle in Hampshire, covering hundreds of miles through some of Britain’s toughest terrain.

One extraordinary challenge. One urgent cause.

For families forced to flee Sudan, reaching Egypt does not mean the crisis is over. Many arrive having lost their homes, livelihoods and possessions, facing uncertainty and struggling to access essential food, healthcare, shelter and other support.

Through this challenge, Josh is partnering with Goodwill Caravan to help provide practical humanitarian assistance to forcibly displaced Sudanese families in Egypt, supporting our work at the Sallam Centre and through our wider emergency response.

Why Roman armour?

The idea began after Josh witnessed a Roman re-enactment during a visit to an archaeological site. The armour immediately stood out as the perfect way to make an already demanding journey even harder, while attracting attention to the cause along the way.

For weeks, Josh will face mountains, rain, physical exhaustion and the weight of full Roman armour, while pushing his chariot from north to south.

The Journey

Starting at Dunnet Head, Scotland, Josh’s route will take him through:

Inverness → Perth → Edinburgh → Trimontium → Hadrian’s Wall → Lake District → Blackpool → Preston → Liverpool → Manchester → Leeds → York → Sheffield → Leicester → Birmingham → Cirencester → Bath → London → Portchester Roman Castle

The journey is expected to take approximately 6–8 weeks, with live tracking throughout.
