What’s the difference between Zakat and Sadaqa?

Zakat and Sadaqah are two important forms of giving in Islam, but they differ in purpose and obligation. Zakat is a compulsory act of worship required once a year from Muslims who meet the wealth threshold, usually calculated at 2.5% of savings or assets held for a full lunar year. On the other hand, Sadaqah is entirely voluntary and can be offered at any time, in any amount. It isn’t limited to money—simple acts of kindness, helping others, or even a smile can count as Sadaqah, as long as it is done sincerely for the sake of Allah.
